ITHACA, N.Y. — Just a month ago, two shelter kittens, Mopsa and Mustardseed, stepped into their foster home—unaware that their lives were about to change forever. Now, the playful siblings are ringing in the New Year in their permanent home, thanks to a loving adoptive family.
A Warm Welcome in Foster Care
Molly, a volunteer with the SPCA of Tompkins County, took in the pair last month, giving them a safe space to grow. From the start, their personalities shone: Mopsa, a gentle calico, was cautious yet curious, while Mustardseed, a bold orange-striped tabby, was an instant lap cat.
“Mopsa is the softest little ball of fluff—she observes everything before acting. Mustardseed? He purred the second he left the carrier,” Molly said.
The duo quickly settled in, exploring their surroundings and even orchestrating a great escape from their pen. “Mopsa was definitely the mastermind,” Molly laughed. “She’s always standing on her hind legs, plotting something.”
Daily Routines and Quirks
Weigh-ins became a breeze when the kittens voluntarily hopped into their glass weighing bowl—a daily ritual to track their growth. “They’ve mastered the self-weighing station,” Molly noted.
Mustardseed’s affectionate nature often led to sibling rivalry. “He’d get jealous if Mopsa stole my lap, so he’d squeeze between us,” Molly said. But Mopsa took it in stride, even grooming her brother mid-nap.
When not cuddling, the pair wrestled anything in sight—until exhaustion hit. “They crash as fast as I do after binge-watching TV,” Molly joked.
A Holiday Miracle
By mid-December, the kittens hit the two-pound mark, making them eligible for adoption. Molly hoped they’d stay together—and fate delivered. A local family fell in love with the duo, adopting them just before the holidays.
“They were snuggling nonstop on their last night here,” Molly recalled. Their new owners shared an update: “Within 24 hours, they were sprinting around and claiming laps. Mustardseed’s already acing cat tunnels, and Mopsa’s a cuddle pro.”
Now, the once-tiny shelter kittens are starting 2025 in their dream home—proof that every ending can be the beginning of something purr-fect.
