When a stray cat arrived at a local veterinary clinic, her future was uncertain. Friendly and clearly accustomed to human care, she waited in vain for an owner who never came. As days passed in the sterile kennel environment, her spirits dimmed—until a rescue group stepped in just in time.
A Race Against Time
Best Friends Felines, a Brisbane-based cat rescue, received an urgent plea: the cat, later named Callooh, was heavily pregnant and needed immediate foster care. “She was very pregnant and couldn’t stay in the clinic,” the organization shared. Within days, Callooh was settled in a quiet foster home, cautiously adjusting to her new surroundings.
Despite her initial wariness, she soon melted into a purring, affectionate companion—especially when belly rubs were on offer.
A Surprise Delivery
A routine vet visit soon turned into a milestone moment. Hours after returning home, Callooh gave birth to three healthy kittens; a fourth followed shortly after. “She was spotless—like a pro,” the foster team noted, suspecting this wasn’t her first litter.
Named after characters from Jabberwocky—Brillig, Wocky, Wabe, and Jubjub—the kittens thrived under Callooh’s attentive care. She balanced motherhood with playful bursts of her own, rediscovering her “inner kitten” between nursing sessions.
Personalities Shine Through
Each kitten quickly developed a distinct character:
Wocky, a fluffy white bundle, earned the nickname “Falkor” (from The NeverEnding Story) for his cloud-like fur and dramatic squeals when separated from snuggles.
Wabe, his laid-back white sibling, preferred a slower pace.
Jubjub, the ginger-and-white troublemaker, charged around the pen “like a man on a mission.”
Brillig, the petite tortoiseshell, held her own in wrestling matches despite her size.
As the kittens grew more adventurous, Callooh savored brief respites—greeting humans at the door or stealing quiet moments alone—before her whirlwind litter pounced on her for meals or play.
A Bright Future Ahead
Now weaned and thriving, the kittens are nearly ready for adoption. Callooh, too, will soon retire from motherhood, having given her babies the best possible start. “It seems like yesterday they were born,” the foster team reflected.
