Big Ben, a long-time community cat who once braved the streets, has finally found the loving home he always deserved—but his journey wasn’t easy.
For years, the fluffy feline lived under a school, cared for by kind strangers. His distinctive “football cheeks” and waddling walk made him unforgettable, but life outdoors took its toll. When rescuers from Bay D’Espoir Kitty Rescue and Exploits Valley SPCA intervened, they hoped to give him a safer, happier future.
A Rough Start in the Shelter
Upon arrival at the SPCA, Big Ben was terrified. He huddled in his kennel, hissing at anyone who approached. Shelter staff saw past his defensive behavior, recognizing a gentle soul yearning for stability.
Diagnosed with FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus), Ben needed a calm, indoor home. But as weeks passed, potential adopters overlooked the senior cat in favor of younger kittens. The shelter’s chaotic environment only deepened his stress.
“His signature sad face somehow got even sadder,” the SPCA shared.
The Perfect Match
Then, Amber saw Ben’s story online—and instantly knew he was the one. Before even hearing back from the shelter, she prepared a cozy room just for him. Days later, Ben was on his way to his new life.
At first, he hesitated. But within 24 hours, he emerged from his carrier, tentatively exploring his new space. Amber offered treats and soft blankets, and soon, Ben was eating comfortably in the open.
A Remarkable Transformation
Four months later, the change is undeniable. Once a silent, hissing cat who hid in corners, Ben now “chats” with Amber, responding to her questions with meows. He’s even befriended the family dog, Max, watching him with curiosity from the couch.
“It makes all the hard work worth it to see Ben’s frown turn upside down,” the SPCA wrote. “He barely moved in the shelter—now look at him.”
For Ben, the street-hardened survivor, happiness was simply a matter of finding the right person to believe in him.
