NEWTOWN, Hampshire — Thick plumes of smoke rose over Newtown on Monday morning after a fire broke out at Greenbarn Cattery on Church Road, near Wickham.
The blaze was reported around 10 a.m. on February 24, prompting a swift response from Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. Residents nearby reported hearing loud explosions shortly after the fire began.
Eyewitness footage captured large clouds of dark smoke rising from the site. Fortunately, no people or animals were injured in the incident.
“Around 35 firefighters remain on the scene of this incident involving a large industrial storage unit and a number of vehicles,” a spokesperson for Hampshire Fire and Rescue said.
Due to the heavy smoke, officials have urged local residents to keep windows and doors closed and to avoid the area while emergency crews continue to work.
Firefighters also tapped into the local water supply to battle the flames, which temporarily left some households without water.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
