EAST MONTPELIER, VT — A bonded trio of stray animals—two dogs and a cat—found wandering the streets together in early March has captured hearts at the Central Vermont Humane Society, earning comparisons to the beloved 1993 Disney film Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey.
The shelter shared the animals’ story in a March 24 Facebook post, dubbing the group a real-life version of the movie’s iconic pets—Chance and Shadow, the dogs, and Sassy, the cat. The rescued animals, now named River, Rain (dogs), and Reed (cat), were discovered together on March 3 and appeared deeply attached to one another.
A Journey to Recovery
Upon arrival at the shelter, the trio received veterinary care for minor health issues, including skin conditions.
“River’s skin has already improved dramatically,” said Erika Holm, co-executive director of the Central Vermont Humane Society, noting significant hair regrowth.
While the dogs adjusted quickly, Reed the cat struggled with separation after the shelter housed him apart from his canine companions.
“He remained shy and uninterested in humans or other cats—until we reunited him with River and Rain,” the shelter wrote. The moment they were brought together, Reed “lit up,” engaging in affectionate head bonks, purring, and cuddles.
A Happy Ending
The story took a heartwarming turn when a local couple expressed interest in adopting all three. By March 28, the trio moved into their potential forever home under a foster-to-adopt trial.
Holm acknowledged the rarity of such a bond: “How often do you see cats and dogs not just getting along, but staying together after going loose?”
For now, the real-life Homeward Bound crew is one step closer to their own happy ending—together.
