CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. — Two people in Carteret County are receiving medical treatment after being bitten by a rabid cat, health officials confirmed.
The Carteret County Health Department reported that a stray cat tested positive for rabies earlier this week. The cat bit two individuals and approached a third person in the Ocean Spray subdivision near VFW Road in Cedar Point.
Those who were bitten have begun post-exposure treatment, according to the health department.
This is the first confirmed case of rabies in Carteret County in over three years.
Health officials are urging residents to stay alert when outdoors. “We encourage the public to be aware of their surroundings and the presence of both wildlife and domestic animals,” said Health Director Nina Oliver.
Anyone who believes they have been bitten or exposed to a potentially rabid animal should seek immediate medical care and report the incident to the health department.
