Kanab, Utah — When Canelo, a 6-week-old orange tabby, arrived at Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, veterinarians noticed he struggled to use his hind legs. Despite thorough examinations revealing no skeletal issues, medical staff suspected a neurological condition affecting his nerves and muscles. But the spirited kitten refused to let his limitations slow him down, adapting to his challenges with playful energy.
A Tailored Treatment Plan
To improve Canelo’s mobility, sanctuary veterinarians designed a specialized care regimen, including weekly acupuncture sessions to stimulate his nervous system. Staff praised him as a model patient—as long as he received plenty of cuddles during treatments.
When Amy Brown, supervisor of the sanctuary’s Bunny House, began fostering Canelo, she discovered he was also incontinent. The team introduced daily cold laser therapy—a noninvasive treatment to reduce inflammation and promote healing. Conveniently, the Bunny House had a laser machine, allowing Canelo to temporarily join its fluffy residents.
Learning From Rabbit Roommates
Canelo was fascinated by his new bunny companions. While some kept their distance, many tolerated his playful antics, hopping around as he chased them. The curious kitten even took an interest in their chew toys and hay, swatting at strands as the rabbits ate.
“Most of the bunnies were open to interacting with him,” sanctuary staff noted. “He respected their boundaries but loved engaging with them.”
Remarkable Progress—and a Feline Friend
The combined therapies and active lifestyle paid off. Canelo gradually regained strength, briefly standing on his hind legs and even climbing scratching posts with confidence.
Once comfortable around rabbits, caregivers introduced him to Llama, another kitten with mobility and incontinence challenges. The pair bonded instantly, becoming inseparable playmates.
Ready for a Forever Home
Now thriving, Canelo is up for adoption and living with other cats at the sanctuary while awaiting a loving family. His resilience and charm have made him a staff favorite—proof that determination, innovative care, and unlikely friendships can work wonders.
