PORTLAND, Ore. — A local feline named Kevin is back to his usual mischievous self after a dangerous encounter with a sewing needle required emergency veterinary care.
The incident unfolded when Kevin, described by DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital as “known for his inquisitive nature,” snuck into a child’s room where sewing supplies were left unattended. Unbeknownst to his owners, the curious cat ingested a needle, leading to a life-threatening situation.
According to a DoveLewis press release shared with PEOPLE, Kevin immediately regretted his decision and attempted to regurgitate the needle. Instead, it pierced through his hard palate and into his nasal cavity, causing severe pain and risking further injury.
The family initially didn’t connect Kevin’s symptoms—vomiting and difficulty swallowing—to the needle. After seeking urgent care, they were referred to DoveLewis, where veterinarians performed a sedated oral exam. The team discovered the needle lodged in Kevin’s mouth, its blunt end pressing against the base of his tongue.
Thanks to swift intervention, the needle was successfully removed, and Kevin has since made a full recovery.
“Kevin’s case is an important reminder of how quickly a seemingly minor incident can turn into a critical situation,” said Dr. Hannah Marshall, a DoveLewis Critical Care Specialist. “We’re so glad Kevin’s family trusted us with his care, and we’re thrilled to see how quickly he recovered.”
The hospital shared images of Kevin’s X-rays and post-procedure recovery, urging pet owners to keep hazardous household items out of reach.
