Cheyenne, WY – A tiny kitten’s misadventure could have ended in tragedy, but thanks to quick action by local animal control officers, the curious feline is now safe—and thriving in foster care.
The ordeal began when Cheyenne Animal Control officers Elizabeth Wagner and Heidi Teasley responded to a resident’s report of distressed cries coming from beneath an abandoned camper. Upon investigation, they discovered a 5-week-old kitten, small enough to fit in the palm of a hand, wedged four feet deep inside a narrow electrical pipe.
“We get calls like this fairly often—animals stuck in odd places—but this little one was in a particularly tricky spot,” Wagner told Daily Paws. Using their expertise, the officers freed the kitten, later named Piper, within 30 minutes. She was then taken to the Cheyenne Animal Shelter for a veterinary checkup, where she was declared healthy despite her ordeal.
But Piper’s story didn’t end there. Moved by the kitten’s vulnerability—she was found alone, with no mother or siblings—Wagner decided to foster her. “Kittens do better with companionship, and I had the time to help,” she explained.
Over the next two weeks, Wagner and Teasley watched Piper blossom from a timid stray into an affectionate, playful companion. “Once she realized we were her food source, she became quite the people-cat,” Wagner joked. Piper even befriended Wagner’s dog and developed a habit of pouncing on her fosterers’ feet.
After her stint in foster care, Piper was returned to the shelter to join other cats—from kittens to seniors—awaiting adoption. The Cheyenne Animal Shelter currently houses several felines with Halloween-themed names, including nods to Hocus Pocus (the Sanderson sisters) and other spooky inspirations.
Prospective adopters are encouraged to ensure they’re fully prepared for pet ownership before bringing a new feline friend home. As for Piper? Her next adventure—finding a forever family—is just beginning.
