Hamilton County, IN — Five timid kittens arrived at the Humane Society for Hamilton County last month, wary and huddled together for comfort. But their anxiety soon melted away in foster care—especially after an unexpected mentorship from two resident cats.
Foster volunteer Jennifer took in the under-socialized litter, which included two orange tabbies (Hickory and Rowan), two tortoiseshell sisters (Linden and Willow), and their bold, fluffy tortie ringleader, Sassafras.
“They were hissy and scared at first,” Jennifer told Love Meow. The kittens spent their first night curled together in a cubby bed, cautiously observing their new caretaker. But with patience and regular meals, their trust grew.
From Hissing to Harmonies
Sassafras, the most confident of the group, was the first to explore. Her bravado encouraged the others—Hickory and Rowan warmed up quickly, while Linden and Willow took more time. Soon, the once-skittish kittens were racing around the room, their initial food-guarding growls replaced by a synchronized chorus of meows at mealtime.
“They’ve found their voices and now yell at me for ‘starving’ them while I’m at work,” Jennifer joked. Post-meal, Sassafras often perched atop a toy tower, “roaring” before dozing off upright—her siblings sprawled out beside her.
Feline Role Models Step In
The kittens’ breakthrough came when Jennifer’s resident cats, Bodie and Bear, took interest. Hickory, the most affectionate of the litter, eagerly approached Bodie, nuzzling his fluffy coat. Sassafras and Linden trailed the older cats, studying their every move, while Rowan and Willow watched from a distance.
“Bodie and Bear have been amazing,” Jennifer said. The kittens now mimic the cats’ behaviors, swatting playfully at their tails and even attempting to solicit grooming. Hickory, in particular, shadowed Bodie, hoping for cuddles.
A Bright Future Ahead
From shy shelter arrivals to energetic, curious companions, the five kittens have flourished. Sassafras remains the adventurous leader, while the others have embraced their playful, affectionate sides.
“They love climbing, chasing, and causing chaos—but also snuggling,” Jennifer said. With Bodie and Bear’s guidance, the once-fearful litter is now ready for adoption, their days filled with toys, naps, and newfound confidence.
