CHICAGO – A scruffy shelter cat with a fighting spirit won over his foster mom’s heart—and never left.
Earlier this year, a malnourished tabby named Snuffleupagus arrived at Chicago Animal Care and Control, battling a severe upper respiratory infection that left him too ill to eat. Despite his condition, the affectionate feline never lost his love for human companionship.
When One Tail at a Time, a local animal rescue, learned of his plight, they rushed him to their veterinary clinic. “He was so sweet and loving right away—just thrilled to be out of the shelter,” said Alli Rooney, a representative from the rescue.
A Foster Home Turns Permanent
Stefanie, a longtime volunteer with the organization, stepped up to foster him. She created a quiet space for him to recover, expecting to help him transition to an adoptive family. But Snuffleupagus—now named Tybalt—had other plans.
“He trusted me immediately. It felt like we just understood each other,” Stefanie told Love Meow. The cat followed her everywhere, unfazed by other pets, loud noises, or even the vacuum. “He’s nearly unflappable—the best cat on the planet.”
From Shelter to Soulmate
Tybalt’s playful, affectionate nature reminded Stefanie of her late cat, deepening their bond. “I thought I’d never find another cat I connected with like that,” she admitted. When another volunteer expressed interest in adopting him, Stefanie realized she couldn’t part with him.
Now fully healed, Tybalt has transformed into a fluffy, confident “office assistant” who demands attention with his striking green eyes. His favorite hobbies include bird-watching, toy battles, and inspecting his mom’s belongings—often by plopping directly on them.
What began as a temporary foster arrangement became a forever home. “I just knew he was mine,” Stefanie said.
