A pair of kittens found abandoned near a rescue center last month have blossomed into affectionate, playful companions, winning the hearts of their foster family.
The two sisters—Toffee Twix, a gray kitten, and Caramel Swirl, a calico—were discovered huddled in the bushes outside Homeward Bound Cat, a rescue organization. A Good Samaritan spotted the frail siblings and brought them inside.
“We don’t know how they got there, but they were clearly in need of help,” a representative from Homeward Bound Cat said. “Though skinny and small, they were incredibly sweet and full of spirit.”
Road to Recovery
At just 6-7 weeks old, the kittens were underweight and battling health issues. Toffee had an eye infection and a cold, while Caramel, though slightly bigger, stuck close to her sister. After receiving veterinary care, nutritious meals, and a warm bed, they began to flourish.
Within days, Toffee’s eye healed, and her curiosity emerged. She explored her foster home and climbed into the lap of Ellen Richter, her foster mom. Caramel, meanwhile, became an instant lap cat, sprinting to Ellen for cuddles at every opportunity.
“All they want is to snuggle. They’re so loving,” Ellen said.
Finding Their Spark
Gaining weight was a challenge at first—especially for petite Toffee, who initially added only an ounce or two each week. Ellen experimented with different foods until she found their favorites. Caramel helped coax her sister to eat, often showering her with affectionate licks and playful nudges.
As their strength grew, so did their personalities. Caramel became enthralled with a feather wand toy, pouncing and growling playfully, while Toffee preferred quieter moments observing from Ellen’s lap.
A Feline Mentor
The kittens’ world expanded when they met Matisse, Ellen’s friendly resident cat. Though much larger, Matisse embraced his role as a gentle big brother—wrestling, chasing, and even giving Toffee nose kisses.
“Caramel follows him everywhere, while Toffee watches from the sidelines,” Ellen said. “Matisse is patient with both of them.”
Ready for Forever Homes
Last week, Toffee reached a milestone—weighing in at two pounds, making her eligible for adoption. The sisters, now healthy and bonded, are described as “mellow but energetic,” with Caramel being the bolder of the two.
“They love laps, shoulders, and cuddles,” Ellen said. “After a tough start, they just want love—and they have so much to give.”
The pair will soon be available for adoption through Homeward Bound Cat, where they hope to find a forever home together.
