Montreal, QC – A stray black kitten named Zack, once struggling to survive outdoors, has found safety—and an unexpected talent for fetch—after being rescued last winter.
From Stray to Safe
Zack was discovered trailing behind a group of stray cats on a Montreal woman’s patio, drawn by the promise of food. Concerned for their well-being, the woman secured the cats and contacted Chatons Orphelins Montreal, a local rescue organization.
Scared and malnourished, Zack initially hid in a corner at the rescue. But with proper care and a foster home, his playful personality soon emerged.
Learning the Ropes
Placed with confident foster cats, Zack quickly adapted to indoor life. “They showed him the ropes,” the rescue shared. He bonded with his feline companions, mimicking their playful antics and snuggling with them after energetic romps.
Though wary of humans at first, Zack grew to trust his caregivers—especially when they engaged in his favorite game: fetch.
The “Feline Retriever”
Zack’s fetching skills set him apart. He sprints after tossed toys, retrieves them, and drops them at his foster mom’s feet, eager for another round. His quirky habit? Dunking toys in his water bowl for a “wash” before bringing them back.
“He parades around with his toy like a prized possession,” the rescue said. When not playing, Zack enjoys birdwatching from his cat tree or nudging his humans for ear scratches and belly rubs.
A New Life
Now a polydactyl “house panther” with distinctive extra toes, Zack has left his days of scavenging behind. He thrives in his forever home, proving that even the shyest strays can blossom with love—and maybe even master a dog’s favorite game.
