FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A kitten trapped headfirst in a dumpster was rescued Friday thanks to a collaborative effort between local firefighters, a veterinary team, and community support.
The small cat became stuck while attempting to squeeze through a narrow opening near the base of a dumpster in Fort Collins. Due to the thick metal construction and the tight fit, the Poudre Fire Authority (PFA) determined that specialized tools were needed to free the animal safely.
After receiving a call from a concerned citizen, firefighters arrived on scene and consulted Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital for assistance. Dr. Amanda Cavanagh, head of urgent care at the hospital, sedated the kitten to keep it calm during the delicate operation.
“The strong material of the dumpster and tight fit required extremely precise use of powerful tools often used in vehicle extractions,” the PFA explained in a Facebook post Monday.
The rescue was successful, and the kitten—now in stable condition—was transferred to NOCO Humane for recovery. The shelter hopes to find the feline a loving home soon.
“The operation was successful, and this courageous kitty is now recovering in good hands,” the university’s veterinary facility shared in a social media update.
This incident highlights the importance of community vigilance and interagency cooperation in animal rescues. Authorities urge residents to report similar emergencies promptly to prevent harm to pets and wildlife.
