New York Mets broadcaster and former MLB star Keith Hernandez is grieving the loss of his longtime feline companion, Hadji, who passed away last week at the age of 22.
In an emotional post on X (formerly Twitter), Hernandez, 71, shared the news with fans. “It’s with a heavy heart that I must tell you that I had to put Hadji down last week,” he wrote. “It was his time to go. I loved him so much and miss him dearly. He was a great companion for 22 years. RIP my little guy.”
In a follow-up reply, Hernandez added, “No quality of life. He passed painlessly and with dignity. Tough one. I don’t think I’ll ever get over it.”
A Celebrated Feline
Hadji, a Bengal cat, had become an unofficial mascot for the Mets, even appearing on fan-made signs and merchandise. Just weeks before his passing, Hernandez celebrated Hadji’s 22nd birthday with an Instagram post captioned, “HAPPY 22nd HADJI!!!” The photo showed Hernandez cradling the cat in the sunlight.
The birthday festivities included new toys, treats, and candles—fitting for a cat who lived lavishly. A 2021 GQ profile highlighted Hadji’s luxurious lifestyle, complete with a custom cat stroller, multiple cat trees, and a backyard fort.
Tributes Pour In
The New York Mets’ official X account paid tribute, writing, “Rest in peace, Hadji.” Fans also shared condolences, with one noting, “You gave him a charmed and wonderful life! I already knew you were a great athlete; the way you treated him showed me that you are truly a great man.”
Another fan added, “I’m so sorry, Keith. I loved the Hadji stories. Hopefully, Hadji crossed the rainbow bridge and is playing happily until you meet again.”
Hernandez, a two-time World Series champion and former first baseman for the Cardinals and Mets, has often shared glimpses of his bond with Hadji, endearing the cat to baseball fans nationwide.
