KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A 39-year-old man from Leavenworth, Kansas, has been convicted of animal cruelty after admitting to killing his cat late last year.
Craig A. Hendricks told authorities he killed the cat on December 12, 2023, because he believed “the cat was trying to kill him,” according to Leavenworth County Attorney Todd Thompson.
An animal control officer recovered the dead cat after Hendricks handed over a box containing the animal, which he had stored in his freezer.
The case faced delays while officials assessed Hendricks’ mental fitness to stand trial. Despite these concerns, the case proceeded, and he was found guilty last week.
“Those who commit crimes against our animals should be held accountable. A society fails when it is complicit in these acts,” Thompson said in a statement.
Hendricks is scheduled to be sentenced on June 18.
