A cat believed to have been trapped in a hotel bin for several days was rescued by workers at a waste plant in Barrow, Cumbria.
The black and white male cat was discovered inside a large commercial bin from The Swan Hotel in Newby Bridge. Staff at the waste plant contacted Animal Welfare Furness, who quickly took the cat to a veterinary clinic for care.
Helen Kelly, a representative from the charity, described the conditions inside the bin. “It was really dark and extremely hot due to the current weather,” she said. “It was very distressing to see.”
The rescue team has named the cat “Phantom” because of his unique markings. He is not microchipped, and the charity is asking anyone who may own him to come forward.
It is unclear how Phantom became trapped, but rescuers believe he may have been stuck in the bin for about three days before being found on Friday.
Kelly reported that Phantom spent the weekend under veterinary care and is recovering, though he remains shaken. “He’s a lovely cat but quite shy. He’s clearly been through a rough experience,” she said.
If no owner is located, the charity plans to find Phantom a new home.
