MADISON, Wis. — A resilient cat named Lady, who lost her ear flaps due to medical complications, captured hearts—and a forever home—thanks to a shelter employee’s creative crochet skills.
Lady, officially named “Lady in a Fur Coat,” arrived at the Dane County Humane Society (DCHS) as a stray, battling chronic infections and hematomas that necessitated the removal of her ears. Despite her challenges, shelter staff described her as affectionate, offering “happy head bumps to everyone she meets.”
To help Lady stand out, DCHS employee Ash Collins crafted a pair of whimsical purple ears, attaching them to a bonnet-like strap. The adorable accessory worked like a charm: Just hours after the shelter shared photos of Lady on Facebook on Jan. 14, she was adopted.
Collins told CNN that the DCHS team “consistently goes above and beyond for the animals.”
“I was more than happy to use my crochet skills to help Lady get the second chance she deserved,” Collins said. “I’m so honored to be a small part of her happy ending.”
In a follow-up post, the shelter celebrated Lady’s adoption, writing, “We were thrilled to see this sweet gal find a home so quickly and start living her best life. Thank you to everyone who supports DCHS in caring for nearly 9,000 animals a year—making stories like this possible!”
The DCHS, which serves Wisconsin’s Dane County, relies on community support to provide medical care and shelter for thousands of animals annually. Lady’s story highlights the impact of creativity and compassion in animal rescue efforts.
