At Epworth Hospital in Richmond, a cat named Elwood has become the most popular “employee”. For six years, he patrolled the venue every day, greeted visitors and even once had his own employee ID badge. Whether it’s medical staff or family members of patients, Elwood always brings joy with his friendly squeaking and mischievous personality.
Elwood is fearless and even gets along well with therapy dogs. He likes rolling around in the parking lot, rubbing against cars or basking in the sun leisurely, but never misses anyone passing by. Although he no longer wears the badge, he is still recognized as the mascot of the hospital, infusing warmth into the high-pressure environment.
However, there is controversy over whether cats should go out freely. Experts suggest that if you want your cat to explore the outdoors safely, you can use a cat terrace or walk it on a leash. Indoor cats can also live happily, just with sufficient exercise and interaction, such as playing for 10 to 15 minutes 2 to 3 times a day.
Elwood’s story demonstrates the positive impact of animals on humans, but it also reminds us to pay attention to pet safety and balance their freedom and health.
