GREENSBORO, N.C. — A spirited orange tabby kitten captured hearts at a local Tractor Supply store before landing in a loving foster home—and winning over a resident cat along the way.
From Store Mascot to Foster Favorite
Employees at the retail chain’s garden center first noticed the kitten, nicknamed “Tractor,” darting between aisles and seeking food and affection. Born to a community cat who later left the area, the bold tabby chose to stay behind, surviving on scraps and attention from staff.
“He was a total ham—very social and fearless,” said Stephanie Grantham, president of Sparkle Cat Rescue, which later took him in. By eight weeks old, workers knew he needed a permanent solution and reached out to Heidi, a local advocate for community cats.
Heidi, who helps manage feral colonies, contacted Grantham’s rescue. “We had a foster spot open, so luck was on his side,” Grantham told Love Meow.
A New Name, a New Life
Renamed Gus, the kitten charmed his way into a carrier when Heidi arrived to transport him. “I’d never met him before, but he was instantly friendly—purring, meowing, and doing happy little tippy-taps,” Heidi recalled.
After a clean bill of health from the vet, Gus settled into his foster home with Lori and Bryan. Though initially shy, he quickly warmed up, exploring toys and demanding cuddles by nightfall.
Brotherly Bond
The next day, Gus spotted Charlie, the household’s resident orange tabby—a larger mirror image of himself. After a cautious sniff, Charlie accepted the newcomer, and the pair soon became inseparable.
“They’re like brothers,” said Lori. “Gus charges at Charlie full-speed for play fights, and Charlie grooms his little head.” The two now share naps by the window and wrestle daily, with tiny Gus fearlessly holding his own.
A Chatty, Charming Future
Gus has blossomed into a vocal, playful companion. “He announces himself—especially at mealtime,” Lori laughed. “He’ll finish his food and hover, hoping for seconds.” At night, he curls up with Lori or the other cats, “the perfect little love bug.”
Heidi plans to track down Gus’s mother to ensure she’s spayed, continuing her mission to help community cats. Meanwhile, Gus—once a stray scrounging in a garden center—is thriving, his future as bright as his fiery coat.
