When a kitten named Toto was placed in foster care at a lady’s home in Brooklyn, she noticed that its eyes were abnormally wide open. After diagnosis, Toto was found to have a rare condition of eyelid hypoplasia, with a congenital absence of part or all of the upper eyelid, resulting in a lack of protection for the cornea and making it vulnerable to damage.
If left untreated, Toto may face the risk of long-term pain and infection. After the foster care took it to the hospital, the doctor reconstructed its eyelids through two surgeries using skin grafts from the mouth. The postoperative recovery went smoothly. Toto no longer relied on eye drops and only needed routine care in the future.
At present, this lively and mischievous little cat is waiting to be adopted and is about to embrace a healthy and happy new life.
