A rugged stray cat, once scavenging for survival, has traded his outdoor struggles for a life of lap naps and endless cuddles—proving that even the toughest tomcats have a soft side.
A Lucky Backyard Discovery
The cat, later named Kodiak, was first spotted in a backyard by a compassionate resident who noticed his scruffy appearance and friendly demeanor. Despite his battle-worn face and an infected leg wound, the large-framed tomcat eagerly sought affection.
After a month of unsuccessful efforts to locate an owner, the Good Samaritan reached out to Homeward Bound Cat Adoptions for assistance. The rescue provided medical care before placing him with foster volunteer Ellen Richter.
Instant Love Bug
From the moment he stepped inside, Kodiak defied the stereotype of the aloof stray. “I’ve never met an adult cat who wanted to be hugged right away,” Ellen said. “He’s a 7- to 8-year-old love bug—just a big, cuddly bear.”
Despite his street-hardened exterior—salt-and-pepper fur, scarred ears, and a distinctive eye mark—Kodiak melted into domestic life. He became a lap-seeking missile, nuzzling faces, kneading blankets, and purring loudly at the slightest attention.
Professional Couch Potato
Kodiak’s new routine revolves around snoozing, snacking, and demanding affection. “He mandates kisses, eats a whole can per meal, and burns energy by sleeping all day,” Ellen joked. At night, he tucks himself into a fluffy blanket, kneading contentedly before dozing off.
Though he occasionally bats at toys, his true talent is lounging. “He’ll roll over for belly rubs or blink slowly to ask for scratches,” Ellen added. “This behavior was learned—we’ll never know his past, but he’s making up for lost love now.”
Ready for a Forever Home
To boost his adoption chances, Kodiak now holds court in a spacious suite at the rescue center, charming visitors and coexisting peacefully with other cats. Staff describe him as a “teddy bear” who thrives on being cradled like a baby.
“After life on the streets, he deserves a home where he can be spoiled,” Ellen said. “He’s the ultimate couch potato—just add love.”
