Brisbane, Australia – A friendly calico cat, found wandering the streets alone, was rescued just days before giving birth to five healthy kittens, thanks to the quick actions of a Good Samaritan.
The pregnant feline, now named Shannon, was spotted by a passerby who noticed her round belly and approached her. Recognizing her need for shelter, the stranger brought her to a partner veterinarian of Best Friends Felines, a local rescue organization.
A Safe Haven Just in Time
With no microchip and no owner coming forward, Shannon was placed in a foster home, where she immediately settled in. “She now has a warm, safe space to bring her babies into the world,” the rescue shared.
The affectionate calico quickly bonded with her caregivers, purring and cuddling as if she knew she was finally secure. Just 48 hours after her rescue, she went into labor.
A Surprise Delivery
Shannon delivered five robust kittens—two tuxedo, two tabby, and one dark ginger-and-white—each weighing a healthy 109-116 grams. Demonstrating remarkable trust, she even climbed into her foster’s lap to deliver her first kitten before moving to her nesting box.
“She is attentive, loving, and never leaves their side,” the rescue said. The newborns latched well, gained weight quickly, and were already showing strong, wiggly movements.
A Bright Future Ahead
Now a few days old, the kittens grow stronger daily under Shannon’s watchful care. Their eyes will open in about a week, marking the start of their exploration.
Once the kittens are weaned, Shannon will be spayed and placed for adoption. Thanks to the stranger who rescued her, this once-homeless cat and her babies now have a second chance at life.
