Exploits Valley, Newfoundland – A tiny black kitten’s life changed forever when volunteers from Bay d’Espoir Kitty Rescue discovered her crying hysterically near a local garbage dump late last month.
The rescuers, who routinely assist community cats in the area, were shocked when they heard the desperate meows coming from the woods. After calling out, they spotted the kitten—later named Bean—emerging from the debris. Volunteers believe she had been abandoned within the past 24 hours.
“Luckily, she’s very vocal and could be easily heard,” said Sandra, one of the rescuers, in a Facebook post.
A Plea for Help
The moment Bean saw her rescuers, she limped through the trash, rushing toward them for help. Despite her injured front leg, the friendly kitten rubbed against them, purring nonstop.
That night, the ten-week-old “panther” kitten slept soundly in a warm bed with a full belly. She was taken to Exploits Valley SPCA, where veterinarians treated her leg injury.
“She couldn’t bear weight on her front left leg, but thankfully, it wasn’t broken,” the SPCA shared. After a thorough examination, Bean was cleared for foster care while she recovered.
The Perfect Forever Home
Bean’s affectionate nature won over shelter staff. “She purrs as soon as you look at her,” they said. Her story reached Wendy Thomas, a local who had previously adopted from the SPCA.
“We always adopt rescues,” Wendy told Love Meow. “When I saw Bean’s post, she just spoke to my heart.” Coincidentally, Wendy’s previous SPCA cat also had a leg injury.
Bean quickly settled into her new home, bonding with her feline brothers. Though still possessive over food—a habit from her time scavenging—she’s learning that meals are now plentiful.
A Bright Future
Now thriving, Bean enjoys birdwatching, sunbathing, and claiming the top spot on the cat tower. With proper care, her leg continues to heal.
From a desperate dash toward rescuers to a life full of love, Bean’s story is a testament to resilience—and the power of second chances.
