After being left outside a home in California’s Central Valley, a small tabby kitten found comfort in an unlikely friend—a German Shepherd. Their instant bond has captured hearts online.
The story was shared in a Reddit post on Thursday by user u/Junk-Miles, also known as Sam. He explained that someone had abandoned the kitten at his parents’ home. Not long after, the kitten attached itself to the family dog.
“Kitten got dumped at my parents’ house. He has fallen in love with their dog,” Sam wrote in the caption. The accompanying image shows the kitten cuddling next to the dog, gazing at it with affection.
Speaking to Newsweek, Sam said his family is known in their small town for taking in animals. Over the years, many cats have been dropped off at their property. “Apparently people know we will take care of them,” he said.
Although his parents usually find new homes for the kittens, Sam isn’t sure if this one will be leaving. “They say a friend may adopt him, but the kitten has clearly formed a strong bond with the dog,” he said. “They said it was an instant attachment. The kitty won’t leave the dog’s side.”
While it may seem surprising, cats and dogs can form close friendships. A 2020 study from Italy, published in PLOS ONE, found that 64% of cats and dogs in shared homes play together. Many also chase each other, wrestle, or engage in ambush games. Cats, however, were more likely to ignore or lash out at dogs than the reverse.
This particular kitten and dog seem to defy those odds. The Reddit post has since gone viral, earning over 28,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments.
One user, thrillkitten, wrote: “Oh, the way they look at each other.” Another added: “Sounds like your parents have a cat now.”
For now, the kitten is enjoying safety, warmth, and a loyal companion—proof that even the smallest creatures can find love in unexpected places.
