Howell, MI — A tiny orange kitten got a second chance at freedom Wednesday thanks to the quick thinking and steady hands of local firefighters.
The Howell Area Fire Department shared a video on Facebook showing their crew carefully extracting the feline after its head became lodged in a car muffler. According to the department, the emergency call came directly to the station when bystanders brought the trapped kitten in for help.
A Precise Rescue
The footage reveals firefighters methodically cutting away sections of the muffler to widen the opening while soothing the frightened kitten. After several tense moments, they successfully freed the greasy but unharmed feline, prompting a relieved, “There you go, buddy!” from one rescuer.
Post-rescue, the department shared a photo of the kitten resting safely in a cage before being returned home. “The muffler just needs a little straightening and a clamp,” they noted humorously in the caption, adding that both cat and car part were “spoken for and headed back to the barn.”
Unconventional Animal Rescues on the Rise
This incident follows other creative animal rescues this summer. In Texas, a family wrapped an orphaned barn owl in a warmed tortilla to keep it stable until wildlife rehabilitators arrived. The bird, later identified as a Mississippi kite, was named “Taquito” by caregivers at Wild West Wildlife Rehabilitation Center.
The Howell firefighters, meanwhile, remained characteristically modest. “Our crew, as always, was happy to assist,” they said.
