LIMA, Ohio — A severely ill cat is now receiving medical care at an Ohio animal shelter and veterinary clinic after a good Samaritan found him in distress and brought him in for help.
The cat, named Ben, wandered into a workplace in Lima, Ohio, appearing weak and desperate for attention. A concerned employee brought him to the Ohio Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), where staff immediately recognized the seriousness of his condition.
“Ben was brought to our back door this afternoon by a good Samaritan after he walked into their place of work begging for help,” the SPCA wrote in a February 1 Facebook post. “His body temperature was dangerously low when he arrived.”
Shelter staff placed Ben on heating pads and began emergency treatment. He was found to have a severe upper respiratory infection and needed medication for his eyes. Ben also received antibiotics, flea and parasite treatments, and regular care to help clear his airways.
“He could barely lift his head when he arrived,” the shelter reported. “Now, he’s starting to fight us a little when we clear his airway — which is actually a good sign.”
By February 2, the shelter described Ben as a “fighter,” noting that he had begun eating on his own. A video showed him eagerly enjoying canned food.
However, on February 3, Ben’s health worsened. He developed jaundice, a condition marked by yellowing of the skin and eyes, which can indicate serious liver problems. Despite the setback, the shelter said Ben was still eating, vocalizing, and craving attention.
Ben is now under the care of Kessen Veterinary Clinic in Delphos. The Ohio SPCA has continued to share updates about his condition on its Facebook page.
Lima is located about 125 miles northwest of Cincinnati.
