A black-and-white cat was caught attempting to scale a barbed-wire fence at a prison in Pococí, Costa Rica, with a makeshift backpack strapped to its body containing cannabis and heroin. The crafty feline—dubbed a “drug mule”—was nabbed while trying to smuggle nearly half a kilogram of drugs into the Pococí Penitentiary by climbing over the facility’s perimeter fence.
Costa Rica’s Ministry of Justice said in a social media post that the would-be smuggler was found carrying several packages of narcotics, including 236 grams of cannabis and approximately 68 grams of heroin. Prison guards believe the cat was being used to deliver drugs to inmates. Andress Gutiérrez, head of Panama’s prison system, stated the cat was found with “a cloth tied around its neck” holding the packages.
“The officers stationed at one of the guard towers spotted the animal in the green zone and immediately raised the alarm,” an official ministry statement translated into English read. It added that “thanks to the rapid response of the personnel, the cat was captured,” and its packages were seized before reaching their intended destination.
The incident highlights the unusual lengths some may go to smuggle contraband into prisons, with authorities noting the cat’s backpack appeared crudely assembled. While the cat’s fate remains unclear, the ministry praised staff for intercepting the attempted drug delivery.
