ALACHUA, Fla. — A tiny kitten caused a brief traffic disruption on a busy Florida highway in mid-May, thanks to a collaborative rescue effort between a vigilant truck driver and a local police officer.
The black feline was first spotted sprawled across US Highway 441 by a driver for Mi Apa Latin Cafe, who quickly used their truck to block one lane of traffic, shielding the frightened animal from oncoming cars. Officer Stanfield of the Alachua Police Department arrived shortly after to assist, halting the adjacent lane to safely retrieve the stranded kitten.
Bodycam footage shared on the Alachua Police Department’s Facebook page shows Officer Stanfield carefully scooping up the tiny cat as vehicles speed past. “I just found a baby kitten in the middle of 441,” he radioed in during the rescue. The kitten, small enough to fit in the officer’s hand, was later seen riding shotgun in his patrol car.
In a heartwarming update, the department confirmed the kitten has since been adopted by one of their dispatchers. “We’re thrilled to share that this little furball has found a loving forever home,” the agency posted.
Another Kitten Rescue Highlights Dangers for Stray Animals
This incident follows another recent roadside rescue in New York, where a Good Samaritan saved a kitten allegedly thrown from a car window in Dutchess County. The feline, less than five weeks old, was taken in by the Dutchess County SPCA and placed in foster care.
The Alachua Police Department has not yet provided additional comments but hinted at further updates on the Florida rescue.
