A brave kitten named Sally Skellington has shown remarkable strength after a sudden paralysis left her fighting for her health.
At just 10 months old, Sally was happily living with her family when she suddenly lost the ability to move her legs. Her owners rushed her to an emergency clinic, desperate to find out what was wrong.
After two days without a clear diagnosis, her family made the difficult choice to surrender Sally to Austin Pets Alive! (APA!), hoping the organization could provide the care she needed.
“She was surrendered due to urgent medical needs for her paralysis,” an APA! spokesperson told Newsweek. “She has suspected Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP) and incontinence. She is improving, so the FIP symptoms should clear up if that is the cause. The incontinence might improve or not.”
FIP is a serious and often fatal viral disease caused by a mutation of the feline coronavirus. While it can be deadly, APA! is leading efforts to treat FIP, offering hope to cats like Sally who might otherwise have little chance of survival.
Sally required extensive medical care. She spent a week hospitalized and has been receiving ongoing treatment for neurological problems and incontinence.
Despite her challenges, Sally’s outlook is now positive. She is expected to finish her treatment in mid-April and is already starting to regain strength and take her first steps again.
Shelter staff praise her gentle and loving nature. “Her temperament is so sweet. During her exam, she was purring so loudly that it was hard to hear her heartbeat, which is adorable,” APA! shared.
As Sally continues to recover, she is looking for a patient and understanding forever family. She will need time to rebuild her confidence but is showing encouraging signs of progress.
Sally has also been friendly with other animals. She enjoys playing with cats nearby through the cattery door and eagerly follows them around. She even showed excitement when meeting a dog, suggesting she would thrive in a home with other pets.
Sally’s journey is a testament to her resilience and the power of proper care. With the right home, she has a bright future ahead.
