Julie Belanger, a veterinary technician from Montréal, Canada, often brings her two cats to work for dental cleanings. These procedures require full anesthesia, which makes the recovery moments especially interesting—especially for her orange cat, Big Mac.
Belanger captured a video of Big Mac about five hours after he woke up from anesthesia. She told Newsweek that he was “alert and able to walk,” but still very “woozy from the drugs.”
In the video, Big Mac sits behind Belanger, staring blankly into space with a dazed expression. Belanger explained, “Waking up from anesthesia is different for each patient; some recover slowly, others quickly, and some become hyper-reactive.” For Big Mac, the recovery was smooth but the sedative effects lasted for several hours. She added that when they got home, he ate and slept normally and was back to his usual self the next day.
Belanger shared the clip on Big Mac’s TikTok account (@bigmacthemenace), and it quickly went viral, gathering over 10.6 million views and 2.4 million likes.
She joked that Big Mac’s usual goofy nature makes the anesthesia-induced space-out look even funnier. “He spaces out even when he’s not sedated,” she said.
Big Mac enjoys roaming the veterinary clinic during his visits for checkups and vaccinations. After the anesthesia wore off, he perked up and resumed exploring the clinic as usual.
Since the video went viral, Belanger has been surprised and grateful for the positive response. Many viewers joked about what Big Mac might be thinking in his dazed state—something Belanger often wonders about herself.
