CUMBERLAND COUNTY, Penn. — What began as a routine school run turned into an unexpected rescue mission when a curious kitten hitched a ride inside a minivan’s engine bay—and ultimately found her perfect home.
Jackie Sanderson was driving her daughter to school in her Hyundai Entourage when she heard faint meowing over the radio. After pulling over, she realized the sounds were coming from beneath the hood. With the help of bystanders—and even an attempt to lure the unseen stowaway with tuna—Sanderson couldn’t locate the elusive feline.
Concerned for the kitten’s safety, she contacted the Camp Hill Police Department. Officer Tricia Moench responded but quickly realized the situation required more than a routine inspection.
“I could look under the hood, but I’m not equipped to take apart a car,” Moench told WPMT.
Sanderson and Moench then reached out to local repair shops, eventually taking the van to Goodyear Tire Service in Lemoyne. There, mechanic Kevin Howell and his team discovered the tiny black kitten—just eight weeks old—tucked deep inside the engine compartment.
Using a lift and flashlights, they carefully retrieved the kitten, later named Gabby. Howell, moved by her ordeal, decided to adopt her, giving the adventurous feline a happy ending to her unintended journey.
“Once we got her out, there was no question—she was coming home with me,” Howell said.
