A woman searching for a new pet was instantly drawn to a unique-looking shelter cat—one whose wide, toothy expression has since taken the internet by storm.
TikTok user Mally (@_justmals) shared her visit to a Humane Society branch, where she intended to adopt a cat. What she didn’t expect was to be captivated by a gray tabby whose unusual open-mouthed expression made him appear to be grinning behind the glass. The video of their encounter has gone viral, amassing over 3.5 million views and more than 735,800 likes.
“Went to the humane society to adopt a cat. This one caught my attention right away…” Mally wrote in text over the video.
Initially, Mally and her companion were unsure if the cat—named Theodore—was available for adoption. He was housed in an area marked “STAFF ONLY,” and staff members couldn’t immediately confirm his status. But after checking the shelter’s website later, Mally discovered that Theodore had been listed as adoptable. Excited, she shared plans to return and visit him.
Adopting shelter cats not only gives animals a second chance but also helps reduce overcrowding in shelters. According to Academy Pet, many shelter cats are already vaccinated, neutered or spayed, and socialized, which can ease the transition into a new home.
Experts recommend considering the cat’s age, behavior, and special needs when adopting. Some may prefer the energy of a kitten, while others may be better suited to a calm adult cat, according to Cats Protection.
Theodore’s quirky look quickly became a hit with TikTok users. Comments poured in, many joking about his expression and demanding updates.
“Dear GAWD please tell me you adopted him. If not, I’m calling dibs,” one user commented.
“You’d better post a TT showing him in your house right meow!” added another.
Others compared the cat’s grin to famous faces, with viewers saying he looked like Jim Carrey, Jack Nicholson, or even “the Michael Myers version of the Cat in the Hat.”
Whether it’s his one-of-a-kind smile or his quirky charm, Theodore has already captured the hearts of millions—and possibly a new forever home.
