Following an evacuation of the Parkside Apartments in Akron, a local nonprofit has stepped in to care for the cats left behind.
In February, more than 60 residents were forced to leave the building after part of its façade fell off, exposing other hazards. The Summit County Division of Building Standards declared the apartment building an imminent danger on February 13, prompting an immediate evacuation. A malfunctioning fire panel also contributed to the decision.
The following day, residents were taken to an overnight shelter by Metro RTA buses. Many were forced to leave behind personal belongings, including pets.
Raina Ward, a resident of the building, expressed the emotional strain of being separated from her cat Clyde, explaining that her pet offers vital comfort, especially as she suffers from seizures.
While Akron firefighters made several attempts to find someone to care for the animals, they had no success. That’s when the nonprofit Riggi Rescue intervened to help.
Ward, relieved to know that her beloved cat is in good hands, expressed gratitude for the assistance.
