RUSSELL SPRINGS, Ky. — A 22-year-old Kentucky man faces multiple felony charges after allegedly biting off a cat’s ear during a domestic dispute and being linked to the deaths of two other cats earlier this year.
Zachary L. Rollins was arrested Saturday and charged with three counts of torture of a cat or dog, a felony punishable by one to five years in prison per count under Kentucky law. The charges stem from separate incidents in April and May, according to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office.
Alleged Attack During Domestic Dispute
Deputies responded to a home on Skyview Drive in Russell Springs around 3 p.m. Saturday after Rollins’ girlfriend reported he was intoxicated and had bitten her cat’s ear off. Upon arrival, officers found Rollins hiding under blankets in bed, per an arrest citation obtained by LEX 18, WHAS 11, and the Lexington Herald-Leader.
The woman provided deputies with photos of the injured cat and a Facebook message Rollins allegedly sent to his mother, in which he reportedly admitted to the act. “It bit me first,” he wrote, according to the citation.
When questioned, Rollins allegedly acknowledged sending the message but denied biting the cat, claiming he had only “tossed it” after being scratched.
Additional Charges in Connection with Cat Deaths
Following his arrest, authorities served Rollins with a separate warrant tied to the deaths of two other cats in April, the sheriff’s office stated in a press release. Further details on those cases were not immediately disclosed.
Rollins is being held at the Pulaski County Detention Center on a $50,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for May 21, according to online records.
