LAKELAND, Fla. — A routine veterinary visit turned into an unexpected adventure for a spirited cat named George, who escaped from SPCA Florida shortly after being neutered.
Still groggy from anesthesia, George managed to open his cage, leap over fencing, and disappear. Despite quick efforts from the clinic staff, including attempts to climb over fences themselves, George was already out of reach.
“He was able to pop that cage open and he sprung out of there — gone in seconds,” said his owner, Bob Beasock. SPCA staff added, “He still had silly drugs in his system,” referring to the lingering anesthesia, which made his swift escape even more surprising.
Incredibly, several days later, George returned home on his own. The determined feline navigated roughly three miles, crossing multiple roads, passing lakes, and weaving through several neighborhoods.
“He had to go through two or three subdivisions, around a couple of lakes, and cross five or six roads,” said Beasock. “If I had been stuck there, I would’ve called an Uber. But George didn’t have that option.”
Experts say such feats are not entirely unusual. Certified cat behaviorist Joey Lusvardi explained, “Cats evolved to naturally find their way back. We think it’s a combination of scent, visual markers, and possibly geo-magnetism.”
But Lusvardi also emphasized the emotional bond. “Contrary to popular belief, cats are very attached to us. They will want to find their way back home.”
Beasock agreed. “I was distraught and heartbroken,” he said. “He needed a human touch — and that’s what he got.”
