FORT MYERS, Fla. — Lee County officials are reviewing their animal shelter policies after a local woman’s cat was euthanized less than two hours after arriving at Domestic Animal Services.
Angela Tardif addressed the county commission on Tuesday, demanding accountability and policy changes following the loss of her cat, Kevin.
“Kevin was dropped off at 8:36 a.m. By 10:30, he was gone,” Tardif said through tears. “He was my family.”
Her story has drawn strong reactions from the community, with Tardif saying she’s received hundreds of supportive messages since the incident was first reported by Gulf Coast News.
“I’m overwhelmed, but I’m also determined,” she said. “I’m asking for something fair—accountability for the employees involved and a change in policy.”
Currently, Lee County operates under a zero-day hold policy for stray cats without tags. That means untagged animals can be euthanized immediately upon intake. Assistant County Manager Marc Mora said that policy is now under review.
“It’s important to hear the frustration,” Mora said. “Today was a good first step toward addressing community concerns.”
County commissioners expressed sympathy for Tardif’s loss and said changes to local ordinances are being considered. Officials will review existing policies and past cases before deciding on next steps.
Tardif hopes her experience can lead to meaningful change.
“I can’t bring Kevin back,” she said. “But if his story helps others find closure or brings change, then that means something.”
