A 3-year-old cat named Ekmek is on a determined path to better health after becoming obese from overeating and inactivity. Inspired by another cat named Şiraz—who recently lost 6 kilograms—Ekmek has begun a strict exercise and diet routine, including pilates and swimming sessions.
Her owner, Pelin Kılıç, grew concerned when Ekmek’s weight ballooned to 8 kilograms (17 pounds) in a short period. A visit to the vet confirmed that her weight posed serious health risks. It was during this visit that Ekmek met Şiraz, a once-overweight cat who had returned to a healthy weight. That encounter sparked Ekmek’s transformation.
Now under the care of veterinarian Bahri Terzi and veterinary physiotherapist Yağmur Denli, Ekmek follows a daily fitness program that includes walking on a treadmill, pilates ball exercises, and swimming. She also follows a special diet to support gradual and safe weight loss.
In just one month, Ekmek has shed half a kilogram. Terzi explained that obese cats should ideally lose weight slowly—about half a kilogram per month—to avoid metabolic issues. “Rapid weight loss can be dangerous,” he said in an interview with Anadolu Agency (AA).
Though Ekmek is making progress, her strong-willed nature presents challenges. “She’s more stubborn than Şiraz,” Terzi noted. “She resists swimming, which is common among cats, but it’s essential to her recovery.”
Terzi remains hopeful Ekmek will reach a healthy weight within four to five months. He warned that obesity in cats can lead to serious problems, such as fat buildup around internal organs and high cholesterol.
He also urged cat owners to be mindful of their pets’ diet and activity levels. “Feeding pets out of love is common, but overfeeding leads to serious health risks,” he said. He advised regular vet visits, controlled food portions, and avoiding rich home-cooked meals.
With support and care, Ekmek is on her way to a healthier life—one paw at a time.
