A cattery owner in Woburn is picking up the pieces after flash flooding destroyed her business and home in just 30 minutes.
Kristine Johnson, who runs Dick Whittington’s Cattery at Turnpike Cottage on Woburn Road, was hit by sudden flooding on September 22. The flood caused extensive damage to both the cattery and her family’s home, prompting a community-led fundraising effort.
A JustGiving page, launched by Kristine’s partner Richard Hardy on September 25, aims to raise £10,000 to support recovery efforts. As of now, over £6,800 has been raised.
Kristine recalled how the floodwaters rose quickly. “We were open as normal on Sunday evening,” she said. “There were a few puddles in the garden, but nothing serious. Then within 30 minutes, the whole garden was underwater.”
With around 50 cats on the premises at the time, Kristine said ensuring their safety was her first concern. “We got them all boxed up and safe,” she said. “We had lots of help from the village. I was amazed by how many people came through waist-deep water to help, even though their homes were also flooded.”
The force of the water damaged fences and several cat pens, leaving 80 to 90 percent of the perimeter fencing destroyed. “There’s thousands of pounds in damage,” she said. “We’ve put years of time, money, and care into the cattery. To see it wrecked like this is heartbreaking.”
The family is now trying to replace essential items like cat beds, feeding bowls, blankets, and household appliances including a washing machine and dishwasher.
Their living space was also severely affected. Most of their furniture and carpets were lost, along with their three-year-old son Oscar’s toys. Both of their cars were also written off due to water damage.
They are now living in one room, with belongings packed in boxes, and expect it will take around six months for their home to return to normal.
Kristine admitted it felt “embarrassing” to ask for help but said she was overwhelmed by the support. “I can’t believe how much people have given. I’m so thankful—it’s completely unexpected.”
