OMAHA, Neb. (KETV) — A Nebraska family witnessed a heart-stopping scene Friday evening as a cat clung for dear life to the roof of a speeding van on Interstate 480.
The Rankin family was traveling near downtown Omaha around 8:30 p.m. when they spotted the distressed feline struggling to stay atop a neighboring van. At first, they mistook the animal for a raccoon but soon realized it was a grey-and-white cat, visibly terrified as the vehicle sped at nearly 60 mph.
“It looked really scared, like, ‘What the heck is going on? ’” Rhonda Rankin told KETV. The family captured the incident on video, which shows the cat crying out and gripping the van’s roof to avoid falling.
It remains unclear how the cat ended up on the vehicle or whether it belonged to the driver. Rankin said she alerted the van’s occupants by shouting and gesturing, prompting them to slow down and pull over. The Rankins did not stop to see the outcome but expressed hope that the cat survived the ordeal.
The Nebraska Humane Society has reviewed the footage and is seeking answers about how the cat became stranded and what happened after the van stopped.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Nebraska Humane Society’s dispatch center at 402-444-7800.
