ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Sterling, a 30-pound feline in need of a weight-loss journey, has been adopted after the Humane Society of Huron Valley (HSHV) shared an urgent plea on social media earlier this week.
The Michigan-based shelter posted a carousel of photos on Instagram, writing, *“Please, someone help us help Sterling. This 30-lb boy needs a special adopter to help him lose weight.” By Thursday, Sterling’s profile on the HSHV website had been updated to reflect his adoption, and he was no longer listed among available animals, Fox 10 Detroit reported. The shelter did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Health Challenges and a Hopeful Future
While the HSHV noted Sterling’s “adorable plump cheeks,” they emphasized that feline obesity poses serious risks. The cat, though “fastidious about hygiene,” struggles to groom himself—requiring staff to shave matted fur from his back. His size also limits his mobility:
Unable to chase toys despite being playful
Cannot jump to look out windows despite curiosity
Difficulty snuggling comfortably despite his affectionate nature
Prospective adopters were advised to consult a vet on Sterling’s diet and provide accessible litter boxes until he slims down. The shelter expressed optimism, writing, “His transformation will be so rewarding… Imagine what a joy he’ll be once he’s healthy!”
Colorado Shelter Seeks Owner of Burn-Injured Cat
In a separate case, the Humane Society of Boulder Valley is trying to reunite an 8-year-old orange tabby with its owner after the cat suffered severe burns in December’s Marshall Fire. The blaze, which erupted in Boulder County on Dec. 30, forced mass evacuations.
The cat was found in Louisville on Jan. 4 and received emergency veterinary care for facial and paw burns. Though one family inquired, they confirmed he wasn’t theirs. The shelter continues to review lost-pet reports and maintains a dedicated webpage for animals displaced by the wildfire.
