A woman was left speechless at a routine vet appointment after discovering that her beloved kitten, believed to be female, was actually a male.
Yasmeen, known on TikTok as @yasmeenfarq, shared her surprise in a video posted on July 18. She had adopted the cat from a previous owner who repeatedly referred to the pet as “she” and assured her the kitten had been seen by a vet. Confident in that information, Yasmeen named her new feline companion Luna.
Everything changed during a visit to the vet for Luna’s first vaccination. The veterinarian informed Yasmeen that Luna was not a female, but in fact a male cat. In her TikTok video, she jokingly asks the kitten if he had been keeping the secret from her all along.
“Still shook. Good thing we were never gonna breed the kitten,” read the caption of the video.
Speaking to Newsweek, Yasmeen recalled her reaction: “I was just like, mouth open. Then, ‘You are kidding me.’ And then [I] was like, ‘The girl we bought her from, well, he said it was a girl.’ I can’t believe that.”
After learning the truth, she decided a name change was in order—out went Luna, and in came Luis. Fortunately, Luis didn’t seem to mind. Yasmeen noted that he even came over to cuddle, as if offering an apology for the mix-up.
She later commented, “I’m honestly quite happy it’s a boy now, from what everyone’s saying about boy cats being more affectionate.”
The video quickly gained traction on TikTok, amassing more than 23,800 views and nearly 2,000 likes. Viewers flooded the comments with jokes and similar stories.
“All this time he hasn’t known how to tell you,” one user wrote.
Another joked, “He’s like, ‘Of course I knew. You didn’t?’”
Many cat owners sympathized with Yasmeen, sharing their own surprise gender reveals. “This has happened to me THREE times,” one user shared. Another commented, “It took two vet visits before we found out Tito was actually Tati.”
Though unexpected, the discovery turned into a funny and heartwarming moment for Yasmeen—and Luis.
