Halle Berry is opening up about the inspiration behind her recent semi-nude, feline-filled photoshoot, which celebrated the 20th anniversary of her 2004 film Catwoman.
Last month, the Oscar-winning actress, 58, shared a series of playful Instagram photos posing topless with her rescue cats, Boots and Coco, while wearing a matching black-and-white cat-eye mask. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Thursday, August 15, Berry revealed the unexpected origin of the shoot.
“Just in time for our 20th anniversary, these four little black cats showed up in my yard,” Berry told Fallon. “They were rescue kitties that appeared in my bushes.”
Fallon, 49, quipped, “This is what happens when you show up at your house?!” referencing Berry’s daring look in the photos.
“That’s why I did it! The kitties made me do it,” Berry joked.
The conversation then turned to Catwoman, a film that was widely panned upon release. Berry acknowledged its initial reception, recalling critics who said it “sucked b—s.”
“That’s not that bad. I’ve gotten worse reviews,” Fallon teased.
Despite its rocky debut, Berry noted that the film has since found a new audience. “The children have discovered it now on the internet, and the kids love it,” she said. “So it’s vindicating, right? Now they’re saying it’s cool, and I’m like, ‘What was everybody’s problem with it?’ So yeah, I’m feeling bratty now.”
When Fallon asked if she’d ever reprise the role of Patience Phillips/Catwoman, Berry didn’t dismiss the idea—with one condition.
“Maybe, if I could direct it. Maybe!” she said with a laugh.
Berry’s latest film, The Union, is now streaming on Netflix.
