Just like their owners, cats and dogs can struggle with seasonal allergies, according to veterinary expert Michael Natale. In an interview with PEOPLE, the licensed veterinary technician explained that pets may develop allergies over time, with symptoms flaring up during the same times of year as humans.
“Every animal has the potential to have or get allergies. Just like people, they can also develop them as they get older,” Natale said. “It’s more common than most people think.”
Allergies Vary by Pet, Require Individualized Care
Natale emphasized that allergies in pets must be managed on a case-by-case basis. He shared his personal experience caring for his Rottweiler, who has severe allergies requiring weekly injections, biweekly medicated baths, and a specialized diet.
The veterinary technician, who also works in education and talent acquisition, noted that chicken is a common allergen found in many pet products.
How Pet Owners Can Help
To properly address allergies, Natale advised owners to first identify the specific allergens affecting their pets.
“Your primary veterinarian, or even a board-certified veterinary dermatologist, can test for allergens,” he said. “If you know the allergen, try your very best to avoid exposing your pet to that.”
He also recommended carefully reading product ingredients, following prescribed allergy medications, and scheduling a veterinary exam if a pet shows unusual symptoms.
By taking proactive steps, owners can help their furry companions breathe easier—no matter the season.
