A rescue puppy’s eager efforts to bond with her owner’s cat have touched hearts online, as viewers watched the emotional moment unfold in a now-viral Reddit video.
The clip was shared on May 17 by Travis, a pet owner from Colorado, under the username u/Ttherav1. It shows Penelope, a 4-month-old pit bull terrier mix, whining softly and crawling toward Monroe, a 10-year-old cat curled up on a bed pillow. While Penelope is clearly desperate for affection, Monroe remains unimpressed but calm.
“Penelope wants to play and cuddle with Monroe so badly, but my cat is still unsure since she’s very full of energy,” Travis told Newsweek. “Monroe isn’t sure of her yet, but I know she will warm up to her eventually.”
The sweet but one-sided interaction quickly gained popularity on Reddit, earning over 21,000 upvotes and nearly 200 comments. Viewers were charmed by Penelope’s determination and Monroe’s patience.
Travis explained that Monroe had a close bond with his previous dog, Oreo, who passed away just a month ago. “They were rescued when they were both 3 months old and grew up together,” he said. “It has been hard for us both losing Oreo. But I had so much love to give, so I wanted to rescue a new dog.”
Since bringing Penelope home, Travis has been pleased with her respectful behavior toward Monroe. Although the kitten-like puppy is bursting with energy, she has given Monroe space—something crucial in helping pets adjust to one another.
Experts from the Animal Humane Society advise pet owners to take slow, careful steps when introducing new animals. This includes letting pets get used to each other’s scent, feeding them separately but nearby, and gradually moving to supervised face-to-face meetings. Repetition and patience are key to building a healthy bond.
While Penelope and Monroe aren’t cuddling just yet, Travis is optimistic. Social media users have also expressed hope for the duo’s friendship. “The puppy is so excited but still respecting kitty’s space,” one commenter wrote. Another joked, “Kitty speaks puppy… Puppy does not yet speak kitty.”
