A budding friendship between two neighborhood cats has captured the hearts of thousands online, sparking comparisons to a feline version of Romeo and Juliet—but with two Romeos.
The story began last spring when Reddit user u/RuralQueso noticed his cat, Kreacher, bonding with an orange cat from next door, now known as Mystery. Mystery would often escape from his home just to spend time with Kreacher, cuddling and playing throughout the day.
Speaking to Newsweek via Reddit, the owner said the cats quickly became inseparable. “They immediately bonded,” he recalled. But their playdates were cut short when Mystery’s owner, realizing his indoor cat had been sneaking out, started keeping him inside.
At first, Mystery’s owner believed Kreacher was a female and was concerned about the interaction. “He apologized and told me his cat was fixed,” the Redditor explained. “I told him it was fine—Kreacher is a boy too.”
Now, the feline friends can only see each other through a window. In a recent post to the subreddit r/aww, u/RuralQueso shared a photo of the cats’ new routine. Kreacher climbs up to the window while Mystery waits on the other side. The screen keeps them apart, but the affection is clear.
“Kreacher makes several trips a day to that window, even in the winter,” the owner said. The two often nap near each other—Kreacher in the sun and Mystery perched on the windowsill. Mystery also meows at the window until Kreacher arrives.
The cats’ owners are on friendly terms. When Mystery occasionally escapes, his owner simply walks over to retrieve him and chat, showing no concern about the daily window visits.
The post quickly went viral, earning over 61,000 upvotes. Reddit users were touched by the bond. “This is heartbreaking. These cats have found a better love than I ever have,” one wrote. Another suggested adding a small platform so the cats could sit and see each other more easily. Others simply called it “adorable.”
While the window keeps them physically apart, it hasn’t broken the bond between these two feline companions. Their story continues to draw smiles—and a little envy—from people around the world.
