Brooklyn, NY – A mother cat and her three kittens were discovered living in a cramped, dirty hole between two buildings in Bay Ridge before concerned neighbors intervened, ensuring their rescue.
The feline family was found near garbage bins in an unsafe location, prompting locals to contact Whiskers-A-GoGo, a local cat rescue organization. Volunteer Leanne responded immediately, arriving the next morning to find the kittens—gray and white tabbies—already venturing dangerously close to a busy street.
“There was no time to waste,” Leanne said. “With the help of tuna, baked chicken, and a neighbor who moved the bins with a screwdriver, we safely trapped the mom and gathered the kittens.”
A New Beginning in Foster Care
The kittens, still young, quickly adapted to human contact, while their mother—dubbed Bay Ridge Mama—remained cautious but cooperative.
“She didn’t give me any trouble when I weighed them daily, though she’d stand at the door and stare me down,” Leanne recalled with a laugh. “An occasional hiss just to remind me who’s in charge.”
The devoted mother cared tirelessly for her trio, keeping them clean and well-fed. Soon, the kittens learned to use the litter box and began playfully wrestling and pouncing on each other, their personalities shining through.
An Unexpected Addition
Days later, Leanne encountered another litter in distress—four gray kittens abandoned outside in cold, windy weather. After waiting in vain for their mother to return, she brought them home and introduced them to Bay Ridge Mama.
“I asked her very politely if she wouldn’t mind feeding four more mouths,” Leanne said. “She took them in right away.”
The surrogate mother nursed the newcomers while Leanne supplemented with bottle feedings. Remarkably, Bay Ridge Mama’s own kittens snuggled with the orphans, creating an unexpected but heartwarming blended family.
A Happy Reunion and Bright Future
Leanne and her team continued searching for the gray kittens’ biological mother and eventually succeeded in reuniting them. Meanwhile, Bay Ridge Mama has blossomed in foster care, growing comfortable with affection and indoor life.
“She loves ear scratches and leans into pets,” Leanne said. “It’s a relief knowing she’ll never have to struggle for food or safety again.”
The kittens, now lively and vocal, are thriving under their mother’s watchful eye. Soon, they’ll graduate to a playpen, where their boundless energy can be channeled into climbing, chasing, and mischief-making—all under the care of rescuers who refused to leave them behind.
