Recently, a 20-year-old blind cat named Tiki in Massachusetts, the United States, ran away from home and accidentally fell into an frozen pond. Fortunately, it was rescued in time by passers-by and animal rescue workers, and was eventually reunited with its owner.
Tiki, a blind black and white tailcoat cat, accidentally intruded into a thin ice-covered pond in Westford. Witness Dawn Felicani discovered it and immediately called the police. However, before the police arrived, the ice cracked and Tiki fell into the icy water. Two construction workers, Nate Puza and Kris Seymour, ventured to row a boat to break the ice and rescue the dying Tiki. Animal control official Kirsten Hirschler said that without timely rescue, Tiki might not survive.
The veterinarian failed to detect Tiki’s body temperature at first, but after warm water care, it gradually recovered. Through social media to find its owner, Tiki was eventually recognized and picked up by its owners, Jon and Melaney Arden. The couple were shocked by Tiki’s appearance in the pond half a mile away and speculated that it might be due to being chased by predators.
Animal officials have called on the public to pay attention to animal safety and suggested implanting microchips in pets. Tiki’s story has also drawn attention to the adoption of disabled cats – blind cats are adaptable and can live normally through other senses. Previously, Ethel, a blind cat in Ohio, also successfully adapted to her new home after being adopted.
Tiki’s miraculous survival was hailed as the “Christmas miracle”, and its owner promised to reduce its outings in the future to ensure its safety.
