What began as an ordinary workday for Colleen ended with an unexpected rescue—and a heartwarming bond between a once-fearful kitten and her dog.
A Chance Encounter
As Colleen left her office building one evening, she spotted a small black kitten darting nervously near the parking lot. The terrified stray attempted to climb a wall to escape, prompting Colleen and a bystander to intervene. After safely capturing the kitten—who was too stunned to protest—she made a quick decision: “I wasn’t going to leave him there,” Colleen told Love Meow.
The journey home wasn’t easy. The kitten, later named D, hid behind the car’s dashboard, forcing Colleen to lure him out with food and a camera. “He was very jumpy and scared,” she recalled.
From Fear to Trust
That first night, D slept soundly in a makeshift bed, his belly full for the first time in what may have been weeks. By the next day, the timid kitten began to relax, soaking up gentle pets and warm meals. His purrs grew louder with each passing hour.
Initially, Colleen and her husband planned to foster D temporarily. But as he blossomed—devouring meals with gusto, racing through the house with toys, and craving cuddles—their resolve wavered. “I’m getting attached,” Colleen admitted.
An Unlikely Friendship
The real turning point came when D met Mr. Carson, one of the family’s dogs. Despite never encountering a canine before, the kitten showed no fear. He allowed Carson to sniff him and, within days, the pair were curled up together in a cozy nap.
“They enjoy sharing laps, dog beds, and even couch space,” Colleen said. Wherever Carson went, D followed—hopping onto chairs to join his new “big brother.”
A Forever Family
Within weeks, D went from a skittish stray to a beloved household member. Now, three months after his rescue, he spends his days playing with Carson and shadowing his humans—especially at dinnertime. “He won’t leave us alone, so we’ve adjusted our routines to include him,” Colleen laughed.
This Christmas, D celebrates as part of the family—proof that sometimes, the best gifts come on four paws.
