Ollie, a two-year-old British Shorthair, was once a lively and curious cat. But when his behavior changed, his owners thought he was simply bored. Over time, though, it became clear that something deeper was wrong.
Karina and her partner Richard shared their emotional journey on TikTok (@ollie.and.otis), where their video of Ollie’s transformation went viral, earning over 966,000 views. It shows a once-joyful cat growing increasingly withdrawn, staring longingly out the window at the neighbor’s cat and running to the door each time Karina left for work.
“We thought he was just bored… then we saw the signs,” Karina said. “My boy was sad.”
In an effort to cheer him up, the couple tried everything—new toys, more playtime, even harness training so he could safely explore outside. But none of it seemed to bring back the spark in Ollie’s eyes. “One day, he let out a cry I’d never heard before,” Karina said. “It broke my heart.”
Then came Otis.
The couple decided to adopt a second cat, and to their surprise, the transformation was immediate. Ollie and Otis bonded within hours. When they first met, Ollie was gentle and curious. He even started grooming Otis right away.
“He didn’t just need stimulation,” Karina explained. “He needed a companion.”
Now, Ollie and Otis are inseparable. Though they have different personalities—Otis is younger and more playful, while Ollie is calm and affectionate—they complement each other perfectly. They enjoy solo naps during the day, but always reunite to play or cuddle.
“Their bond is very special,” Karina said. “It’s clear they love having each other.”
The heartwarming story resonated with viewers, with the TikTok clip titled “The best decision we have ever made. We gave our cat a friend he needed” receiving over 85,000 likes. Many users shared similar experiences in the comments.
“My senior girl is in her twilight years, so I adopted a kitten for her. It’s like she’s had a second wind,” one person wrote.
Experts agree that while cats are often thought of as solitary, many can thrive with a companion—especially if they’ve been socialized early. However, the ASPCA notes that some cats are territorial or less open to sharing space, so new introductions should always be done with care.
For Ollie, having a friend made all the difference. And for Karina and Richard, it was the decision that gave their cat joy again.
